The
other night afforded me the opportunity to attend a nice fireworks display.
As sunset turned to dusk and dusk to night, a range of thunderstorms slowly made
its way behind the fireworks field of view. I was taken with the beauty
of the fireworks but when it comes to lightning the word is "awe!" The charge in a large lightening bolt could power a small city for a year if it could be captured. The bright light we see is actually only a an inch or less across. It tears through the air seeking the route of least resistance to its grounding point. In the process it super-heats the surrounding air causing the thunder. You have seen the results. A green and well-watered tree can be set on fire by this creation. Man feebly tries to mimic lightening with fireworks but the power is beyond our ability. Even the simplest of creatures has a genetic structure almost beyond our understanding and certainly beyond our reproducing. Hebrews 1:10 says, "You, Lord in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works ofyour hands." Jesus Christ is revealed in the New Testament as the Creator and sustainer of all things. No person can even come close to that claim. The contrast is startling! The God who created lightening is the One we worship. Fireworks are but a cheap imitation! When was the last time you stood in awe of God's great works?
