Harry
Houdini, the famous escape artist of the turn of the 20th century, could escape
from almost anything. He often performed in small towns, and as a part of his
setup, would get locked in the local jail. His challenge was to escape as quickly
as possible.
One time Houdini entered a jail that looked quite easy. He pulled
a stiff piece of metal from his sleeve and started on the lock. He quickly noticed
there was something different about the lock, then became frustrated. For two
hours Harry labored feverishly, finally collapsing to the floor and against the
door in defeat. The door swung open. It had never been locked! It was locked only
in his mind.
The prophet Jeremiah acknowledged out of some frustration that his
life was not his own (verse 23). You may feel jailed at being a servant of God,
when the lock is only in your own mind. The Bible teaches that we have been purchased
from a destructive slavery and brought into the service of the THE KING. We have
become the Temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:17), and freed from our
slavery to sin (Romans 6:16). We have been chosen to serve by bearing fruit, praying
powerfully and loving one another (John 15:16-17).
You are not your own! It is not a question of if you will serve,
but whom. Choose today to serve The Lord Jesus Christ!
